It's decentralized and kind of like IRC (which means both chads and trannies love it, as opposed to discord which only trannies love) but with more stuff. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrix_(protocol)?useskin=modern.
It's connected to some company named Amdocs, which is connected to the Mossad, or so I've heard.
Matrix is best known for its use with the Element client, which attempts (and mostly fails) to turn the Matrix protocol into 'cord.
