India Pale Ale (commonly referred to as "IPA") is a type of beer originating from the British East India Company in the 1800s. This style of beer is notable for its semi-high alcohol content, hazy appearance, hoppy taste, and distinct mouthfeel. IPAs experienced a resurgence in popularity beginning in the late 2010s which continues to this day. They are widely viewed as one of the GOAT beverages by numales and beer snobs alike (these two groups having a lot of overlap).

An IPA and your average IPA-enthusiast.

IPA Subvarieties

West Coast IPA

West Coast IPAs are relatively darker in color, reflecting the absolute state of USA's west coast. They are also distinctly bitter in taste, which apparently in the beer world is a good thing. According to wikipedia, West Coast IPAs typically range from 40-70 IBUs (International Bitterness Units), which means absolutely nothing to a regular person[1].

New England IPA

Soyjak's favorite type of IPA! This varienty is known for having a light color, a cloudy appearance, and a fruity taste. It's no surprise that something this white and fruity was invented in Vermont[2].

Double IPA

Just like a normal IPA, except with more alcohol and more hops instead of water.

Triple IPA

It's barely a drinkable substance at this point.
